Intelligent ventilation for better and healthier indoor air

SENSIndoor is one of the last research projects funded under the Seventh framework Programme of the EU (FP7). The project is coordinated by Professor Andreas Schütze and his team from the Lab for Measurement Technology at Saarland University in Saarbrücken. The European Commission provides the partners with 3.4 million Euros over a period of three years. 22 members of the consortium came together for the first time at Saarland University from 22-23 January 2014 to launch the project, which officially began on 1 January 2014.

With the aim to improve indoor air quality and at the same time increase energy efficiency, SENSIndoor sets out to develop smart, energy efficient ventilation systems. Novel nanotechnology-based microsensor systems to be developed within the project will enable the researchers to ensure high indoor air quality with pollution kept as low as possible and energy efficiency achieved through targeted, precise automatic ventilation. These optimized ventilation schemes developed in SENSIndoor will be adapted to specific application scenarios like schools, kindergardens or apartment buildings. During the kick-off meeting, the project partners not only got to know each other personally but also engaged in fruitful discussions regarding the development of a concise action plan for the first months of SENSIndoor.

The SENSIndoor consortium is composed of 10 institutions from five different European countries, striking the balance between academic research and the industry. What is more, the project is strongly connected to the COST Action EuNetAir, the European Network on New Sensing Technologies for Air-Pollution Control and Environmental Sustainability.

As managing partner, EURICE has been involved in SENSIndoor since the proposal stage and will contribute to the successful implementation of the project in the future. EURICE will also serve as helpdesk for all partners for all questions relating to administration and dissemination issues.
